Eric Saudi is a visual artist who holds his subject matters close. He carries photographs in his pocket of family members, Puerto Rico, and a childhood image of him standing beside his priest. Sketches and a coloring book page occupy space in his pocket, too. They are sentimental images, and they are notes that outline Saudi’s experiences of the world.
In Marginalia, Saudi recasts white gallery walls in a specific and non-descript beige color. On this skin, Saudi prepares an installation of paintings and drawings. He overlays these works with circles and arrows that signal what hovers between flesh and meat. Quiet geometries give way to the uneasiness between gayness and religion, slaughter and food, condemnation and celebration.
Marginalia is Eric Saudi’s first one-person exhibition. He lives and works in New York and holds a BFA in Studio Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
